Jurgen Klopp has called upon his team to stay focused and motivated in order to finish in the Premier League top four and secure Champions League qualification.
Liverpool face Swansea City this afternoon and speaking ahead of the game Klopp acknowledged that a title bid is unrealistic given that they are 20 points behind league leaders Manchester City.
However, he believes that there is still plenty for the team to play for and said that they should not become complacent just because City are so far ahead.
“We have to qualify for the Champions League. We have to finish as high as possible,” Klopp said.
“It looks like we could be second, third or fourth this year, that’s a fantastic situation. Not the dream but a fantastic situation. That’s what we are working on and for this we have to improve in all departments. This year, I don’t think that anyone apart from Manchester City and maybe Manchester United are thinking too much about how they can win the league.”
He praised the team for their consistency and said that if they can avoid mistakes, such as those made in the 3 – 3 draw with Arsenal, then they will win more games than they lose or draw.
Klopp said that the team should always aim to perform before worrying about how the opposition will react. Even though Swansea are at the bottom of the table he doesn’t want his players to assume that it will be an easy match.
“We will be ready and we will perform, if possible, like against Arsenal but avoid the mistakes we made. I don’t really remember the game from last year, to be honest. I remember that we lost it. But that’s not the plan!”
