After Mesut Ozil’s stunning goal to secure Arsenal’s victory over Newcastle United last weekend, boss Arsene Wenger has insisted that the player wants to stay with Arsenal and that he is currently playing the best football of his career.
Ozil’s contract expires in the summer and there have been reports linking him with Manchester United, however, Wenger said that there has been no official approach.
He is yet to agree fresh terms with the club but Wenger is determined that neither Ozil nor Alexis Sanchez will be sold in January, even though both could walk away for free in the summer.
Sanchez came close to moving to Manchester City in the summer but Wenger believes that Ozil is where he wants to be.
“I believe he wants to stay, he is not to be convinced [to sign a new contract],” said Wenger.
“You want nobody to leave and you see where we stand on that. But at the moment, it’s very difficult. Until the end of the season we know what it is, but after that, I cannot tell you.”
Arsenal fans have mixed feelings about Ozil but Wenger believes that he is now playing the best football since he arrived at Arsenal four years ago. When asked if Ozil is currently in his best run of form for the team Wenger said, “Yes, certainly. I think he takes responsibility and that’s what you want from him. He is more mature, he guides the team very well, he does a lot on the ball and your heart rate always goes down when he has the ball.”
